The goal of the research partnership has been to use Arizona as the key test case to pilot and develop better metrics to capture and track household water insecurity in US, as a necessary step to the best policy and interventions decision-making

Led by the team at Arizona State University, this project’s goal is to improve water security for the Arizona households and communities that need it most.

Uranium and arsenic mining across the Navajo Nation has left a legacy of contamination that continues to threaten water security for many communities. Building on Dr. Jani Ingram’s long-standing collaboration with the Navajo Nation, quarterly samples are collected from key sites at Coppermine in locations historically affected by uranium extraction and milling.

This project, led by Dr. Radonic at Northern Arizona, aims to better understand residential experiences with private water provisioning and different perspectives on water security in non-tribal water haul areas of Coconino County

The Northern Arizona AW4A team, led by Dr. Lucero Radonic, is in the process of conducting a Regional Landscape Analysis across the Colorado Plateau of Northern Arizona.

The Water, Society, and Policy Laboratory in partnership and collaboration with Arizona Water for All, the Environmental Defense Fund, and Water for People has been working on developing and launching the Water Leadership Institute in Northern Arizona

This project, led by Ashleigh M. Day, PHD, is focused around collecting data about northern Arizona residents' risk perceptions and experiences related to water insecurity, as well as residents' preferred media and trusted information sources for receiving future water-related communications.

Led by Dr. Carney, this ongoing project’s goal is to better understand residential experiences and perspectives of water insecurity in southern Arizona counties, including Santa Cruz County, Pima County, and Cochise County, and to co-develop effective, long-term solutions to drought and water insecurity through community capacity-building

Co-led by Dr. Carney, this project’s goal is to engage local residents in mapping the history of waterways and seasonal water flows in the greater Tucson region through oral history methods and to establish a community archive that can facilitate knowledge and resource sharing and be used to help inform regional drought planning and water security initiatives. 

Led by Aminata Kilungo, this project under Heatlh for Society works with 200 households around Nogales to study how people perceive their household water quality with an array of lab-based water quality measures of that water.

The Water Leadership Institute recruits the next generation of water leaders (ages 18+) to explore water challenges in their communities and reimagine collaborative solutions. This project aims to promote awareness and create spaces for dialogue to develop a shared understanding of local water issues and to create a community of learning, connecting participants to information, opportunities, and networks to advocate for their community’s water, and to support and inspire young leaders to be more engaged in local water and climate efforts.

Co-led by Dr. Carney & Dr. Laurel Bellante, this program is to disrupt dominant environmental narratives and support youth from historically marginalized backgrounds in achieving greater recognition and agency in their pursuit of food and water justice through creative self-expression and dynamic storytelling.
